Tips and Tricks for a Joyful, Gut-Healthy Holiday Season That Includes Everyone
The Christmas holidays are meant to be a time of joy, connection, and celebration. But for many of us with autoimmune conditions or gut health concerns, it can feel like the holiday table is more of a minefield than a feast. The temptation of indulging in rich foods, not to mention the social pressures of eating what everyone else is eating, can often lead to feelings of exclusion. I’ve been there myself—watching my loved ones enjoy the food while I felt left out or envious.
But after realizing the impact of food and inflammation, I quickly understood I needed to navigate these holiday hurdles, and I've learned how to enjoy both the season and the food, without compromising my health.
So, if you're worried about missing out this year, here are some practical tips and tricks to help you stay present at the table, feel included, and even enjoy some delicious gut-friendly food.
Tip #1 - Make a Gut-Healthy Apéro Plate
Instead of the typical chips, processed meats, and cheese platter, create a gut-friendly apéro spread filled with foods that nourish your gut while still feeling indulgent. You can include simple, tasty bites like stuffed mini bell peppers - if you can tolerate them - (stuffed with a mix of avocado, mashed chickpeas, and lemon), dried seaweed snacks, salmon topped on a cucumber slice, and sliced avocado with sea salt and lime. For something crunchy and satisfying, try roasted chickpeas seasoned with olive oil, cumin, and paprika—these are high in fiber and perfect for snacking without the gut irritation.
Tip #2 - Bring Your Own Gut-Healthy Winter Dish
One of the best ways to ensure you're not left with nothing to enjoy is to bring your own dish. You can make a delicious, autoimmune-friendly version of a holiday classic that will not only keep your health in check but also impress your friends and family.
For example, try a homemade vegan cashew fondue! It’s creamy, comforting, and perfect for dipping a variety of gut-friendly veggies and gluten-free bread. To make it, blend soaked cashews with nutritional yeast, garlic, lemon juice, turmeric, and a pinch of salt until smooth. Heat it in a pot and serve with a platter of steamed broccoli, cauliflower, carrot sticks, cucumber slices, and some gluten-free crackers or bread. It's so incredible !

Tip #3 - Prepare a Gut-Healthy Dessert
No holiday celebration is complete without a dessert! But you can easily make a gut-friendly treat that still feels festive.
One of my go-to desserts is a vegan chia pudding with coconut milk. Simply mix chia seeds with coconut milk and a bit of maple syrup, let it set in the fridge for a few hours, and top with fresh berries and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Another option is a raw chocolate avocado mousse. Blend ripe avocado with raw cocoa powder, coconut milk, vanilla extract, and a touch of honey for a rich, creamy, and nutritious dessert that’s perfect for the season. It's smooth, indulgent, and full of healthy fats to support gut health.
Tip #4 - Make a Healthier Holiday Cocktail
If you're craving for a glass of champagne or a cocktail, let's shift it to a health-boosting one ! Skip the sugary and alcoholic holiday cocktails and opt for something that aligns with your gut health. Think of a festive kombucha spritzer, or a mocktail made with fresh herbs and fruit. It’s a great way to join in the celebration without the added sugar and inflammation.
I love making a cranberry and ginger kombucha spritzer—perfect for the season and my gut health. It’s refreshing, delicious, and keeps me feeling great while everyone else sips on heavier drinks.
Tip #5 - Enjoy the Moment, Not Just the Food
The holidays are about much more than just the food. The company, the laughter, and the memories you make with your loved ones are what truly matter. Yes, it's tempting to focus on what you can or can’t eat, but remember to be present in the moment. And to be honest, with this list of dishes and food, how can you still feel sad?
